Description
Weck-Cel® Surgical Eye Spears are used in ophthalmic surgery as a fluid control device as they can quickly absorb any extra fluid around the site of the surgery. Fast wicking is essential to ensuring that the eye surface remains clean. They are made from natural cellulose, which has a high absorption capacity but can remain rigid even during delicate procedures. They are not friable and don’t release fibers or lint, which can contaminate the surface of the eye. While these surgical eye spears are meant for ophthalmic use, eye spears intended for use in LASIK procedures are available separately.
The eye spear has a white triangle-shaped head (tip) and a light blue handle to offer contrast and visibility. The tip is by design a sharp point of contact but may widen on absorbing fluids. The handle is made using polypropylene, a malleable plastic that offers greater resistance to heat and other chemicals. Being a disposable product, Weck-Cel® Surgical Eye Spears are not meant for reuse.
Each box contains 18 pouches of 10 eye spears each or a total of 180 eye spears, which are pre-sterilized and packed in a sterile facility. Surgical eye spears are also available in a box of 24 pouches containing 6 eye spears each (144 eye spears, BVI PID 0008680). Note that surgical eye spears are also available with Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) foam heads.
