Description

Propofol Injection is a short-acting intravenous anesthetic used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. It is also employed for sedation in mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care settings and for procedural sedation. The formulation consists of a lipid-based emulsion containing 10 mg/mL of propofol, designed to provide rapid onset and smooth recovery.

The primary mechanism of action involves potentiation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors, leading to central nervous system depression. This action results in sedation, hypnosis, and a reduction in cerebral metabolic demand. The drug has antiemetic properties and provides cardiovascular and respiratory depression, necessitating careful monitoring during administration.

Propofol Injection is administered intravenously, with dosage adjustments based on patient factors such as age, weight, and medical condition. It is supplied in single-dose vials, each containing 20 mL of a 10 mg/mL emulsion. Strict aseptic technique is required during handling to prevent microbial contamination, as the formulation lacks preservatives.
