Description
Prevnar 13 is a pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine derived from diphtheria CRM 197 protein. It is a suspension of 0.5 ml supplied in a single-dose prefilled syringe that comes in a pack of 10. Prevnar 13 is indicated in children of 6 weeks to 5 years of age, 6 years to 17 years and in adults from 18 years and older where the vaccine is effective for different strains of S.
Pneumoniae for different age groups. It is used as an active immunization against invasive diseases caused by streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes.
It is also used to prevent otitis media caused by S. Pneumoniae serotypes. Prevnar is also effective in the prevention of meningitis.
The suspension must be taken via the intramuscular route only. Note that the vaccine is not used to treat an active infection. However, it works by exposing the body to a small amount of inactive bacteria stimulating it to develop immunity against the disease.
