Description

Pregnyl – HCG (Merck) 10,000 IU is a human chorionic gonadotropin preparation used in the treatment of anovulation and male hypogonadism. It mimics the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge necessary to trigger ovulation in women and stimulate testosterone production in men. In fertility protocols, it assists in final follicular maturation and ovulation induction.

Although generally well tolerated, Pregnyl may cause serious adverse effects, including ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) and thromboembolic events. OHSS is a potentially life-threatening condition marked by enlarged ovaries, ascites, and electrolyte imbalances. Thromboembolism risk, although low, may increase in predisposed individuals.

There are no significant common side effects, but close monitoring is advised, especially in women undergoing fertility treatment. Healthcare professionals should monitor for early symptoms of OHSS, such as abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea. The use of Pregnyl is contraindicated in individuals with hormone-sensitive cancers like prostatic carcinoma and in cases of precocious puberty due to its stimulatory hormonal effects.
