Description

Neostigmine 5 mg/10 mL is a cholinesterase inhibitor used primarily for the management of myasthenia gravis, a condition where neuromuscular transmission is impaired due to the autoimmune destruction of acetylcholine receptors. This drug acts by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, thus increasing the availability of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions, thereby enhancing neuromuscular transmission and improving muscle strength.

In addition to its use in myasthenia gravis, neostigmine is also employed in the reversal of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants after surgeries to facilitate faster recovery of muscle function. This role highlights its importance in anesthesiology, where it helps counteract the muscle-paralyzing effects of certain drugs used during surgery.

Neostigmine must be administered cautiously, especially in patients with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions, as it may cause bradycardia, hypotension, or other related effects.
