Description
MMR vaccine is a 0.5 ml of single-dose vial that is supplied with a diluent. The lyophilized vaccine is a combination of live Measles, Mumps and Rubella viruses. MMR vaccine is indicated for active immunization in patients 12 months of age or older to prevent measles infection which is one of the most readily contagious diseases. MMR is also effective against Mumps and Rubella infections. The first dose of the MMR vaccine is administered at the age of 12 to 15 months. The second dose is then administered at 4 to 6 years old. For administration, the vaccine must be reconstituted using the entire volume of diluent supplied.
After reconstitution, the lyophilized vaccine will change from a yellow compact crystalline lump to a clear yellow liquid. The reconstituted vaccine must be administered as soon as possible to minimise the chances of loss of potency. Also, discard the reconstituted vaccine if not used within 8 hours. It is recommended to administer the vaccine either on the deltoid region of the upper arm or the higher anterolateral part of the thigh. MMR vaccine shall be administered with caution in patients with a history of febrile seizures.
