Metoclopramide 10 mg tablets are a prescription medication primarily used to treat gastrointestinal conditions. It is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with delayed gastric emptying, also known as gastroparesis, in diabetic patients. It is prescribed for the management of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or postoperative recovery.

The active ingredient, metoclopramide, acts as a dopamine receptor antagonist. By blocking dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) of the brain, it reduces the sensation of nausea and vomiting. Simultaneously, it increases the tone and motility of the upper gastrointestinal tract, promoting gastric emptying and intestinal transit.

Common side effects of metoclopramide include drowsiness, fatigue, restlessness, and diarrhea. Long-term use or high doses may lead to more severe adverse effects such as tardive dyskinesia, a condition involving involuntary muscle movements. Due to this risk, the duration of treatment is typically limited, and the medication is used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary.
