Description

Metformin ER 500 mg is an extended-release oral antidiabetic medication primarily used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It improves glycemic control by reducing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and enhancing insulin sensitivity. It is also used off-label for conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and in weight management protocols.

The medication is administered orally, typically once daily with the evening meal to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. Taking it with food helps reduce side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The extended-release formulation ensures a gradual release of the drug, leading to improved tolerability and adherence.

A significant risk associated with metformin is lactic acidosis, particularly in patients with impaired renal function. Renal function should be assessed before initiation and monitored periodically throughout treatment.
