Description
Cyanocobalamin injection is a synthetic form of vitamin B12 used in the treatment and prevention of vitamin B12 deficiency. It is essential for DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, and neurological function. Deficiency can result in pernicious anemia, neurological disorders, and other metabolic abnormalities. This formulation is supplied as a single-dose vial containing 1,000 mcg/mL, with each package containing 25 vials of 1 mL.
The mechanism of action involves its conversion into active coenzymes, methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin, which are necessary for metabolic functions, including homocysteine metabolism and myelin synthesis. Cyanocobalamin corrects megaloblastic anemia by restoring normal red blood cell maturation and division.
Common adverse effects include injection site reactions, headache, dizziness, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, itching, and anaphylaxis may occur. Caution is advised in patients with Leber’s disease, as cyanocobalamin may worsen optic nerve atrophy.
