Description
Cyclomydril Ophthalmic Solution is a sterile preparation combining cyclopentolate hydrochloride (0.2%) and phenylephrine hydrochloride (1%). This solution is designed for ophthalmic use to produce mydriasis (pupil dilation) and cycloplegia (paralysis of the ciliary muscle). It is primarily used in diagnostic and preoperative procedures where pupil dilation is necessary, such as fundus examination and certain surgical interventions.
Cyclopentolate, a muscarinic receptor antagonist, works by inhibiting the parasympathetic stimulation of the sphincter pupillae and ciliary muscle. This action leads to dilation of the pupil and loss of accommodation. Phenylephrine, a selective alpha-adrenergic receptor agonist, further enhances mydriasis by stimulating the dilator pupillae muscle.
Common side effects may include temporary stinging, increased intraocular pressure, and blurred vision. Care should be taken in pediatric and elderly patients, as systemic absorption may lead to adverse effects such as increased heart rate, dry mouth, or central nervous system disturbances.
