It is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that stimulates the release of gonadotropins by inhibiting estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus, thereby inducing ovulation. Typically prescribed to women with anovulatory infertility, Clomid is also used in select cases of male infertility, particularly in men with hypogonadism.

The usual regimen involves taking one 50 mg tablet orally once daily for five consecutive days, beginning on the fifth day of the menstrual cycle.
