Anastrozole 0.5 mg is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor used primarily for the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It works by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which is responsible for converting androgens into estrogen. By reducing estrogen production, anastrozole slows the growth of estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells.
Each tablet contains 0.5 mg of anastrozole as the active ingredient, along with excipients such as lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose. The tablets are typically taken orally once a day, with or without food. The standard dosage is 0.5 mg per day, although adjustments may be made depending on the patient’s response or specific treatment regimen.
Common side effects include hot flashes, joint pain, nausea, fatigue, and headaches. Less frequent but serious side effects may include bone loss, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular complications. Regular monitoring of bone density is recommended during treatment. Anastrozole is contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women, as it may harm the fetus or infant.
