Description
Ammonia inhalant comes in a unit dose of 0.3 ml Ampoule packed in a box of 10. It is a fast acting respiratory stimulant. The inhalant contains 15% ammonia and 35% alcohol. Other ingredients include FD&C red dye, alcohol USP, lemon oil FCC, lavender oil FCC, nutmeg oil FCC. The inhalant is also called smelling salts and is used to prevent fainting or arouse consciousness. The ammonia gas in the inhalant irritates the membrane of lungs and nose and hence triggers an inhalation reflex.
The reflex eventually improves respiratory flow rates and alertness by altering breathing pattern. Ammonia inhalant is also used by athletes to improve their performance since they have a stimulant effect. Special care must be taken to ensure the inhalant is held away from the eyes and face. In case the medication gets in the eyes, irrigate with water for about 20 minutes. Also, hold the inhalant approximately four inches away from the nostrils. Slowly let the patient inhale the inhalant until they are awake. Since the product is flammable, avoid keeping it near open flame.
