Description
Metformin HCl 500 mg extended-release (ER) tablets are oral antihyperglycemic agents used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. As a biguanide, metformin lowers blood glucose levels by decreasing hepatic glucose production, improving insulin sensitivity, and enhancing peripheral glucose uptake. It does not stimulate insulin secretion, reducing the risk of hypoglycemia.
Each tablet contains 500 mg of metformin hydrochloride in an extended-release matrix for once-daily or twice-daily administration, depending on clinical requirements. Absorption occurs primarily in the small intestine, with peak plasma concentrations reached within six to eight hours. The medication is excreted unchanged in the urine, with a half-life of approximately six hours.
Common adverse effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and flatulence, which often subside with continued use. Rare but serious complications include lactic acidosis, particularly in patients with renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, or conditions associated with hypoxia.
