Description

Gelfilm is a sterile ophthalmic film that is absorbable gelatin film of approximately 0.075 mm thickness. The film is designed to be used as an absorbable gelatin implant in thoracic, neuro and ocular surgery. The dried state of the film holds the texture and appearance of cellophane. Whereas upon getting wet, the film acquires a rubbery consistency that can be cut into a desirable shape and size to make it fit for irregular or rounded surfaces. To use the film, it is immersed in a sterile saline solution and is allowed to soak until it gets pliable.

The pliability makes it easy to cut into a desired shape and size. For covering dural defects, the film is placed over the brain surface and the edges are tucked beneath the dura. The wound then is closed in a usual manner. During scleral buckling operation, the film is placed over the sclera. The conjunctiva and the muscle is then sutured upon the underlying film. To retain the sterility, use the film immediately after withdrawal.
