Description
Teriparatide is a recombinant human parathyroid hormone analog used to promote bone formation in patients with osteoporosis. It stimulates osteoblast activity, increasing bone mineral density and reducing fracture risk. This medication is indicated for postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, men with primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis, and patients with osteoporosis associated with prolonged glucocorticoid therapy.
Administered as a subcutaneous injection, each Forteo prefilled pen delivers 20 mcg per dose, providing 28 daily doses per 2.4 mL cartridge. The self-injectable pen allows for convenient daily use. Proper administration involves injecting into the thigh or abdomen, rotating sites to minimize local irritation. Patients should follow aseptic techniques and ensure proper storage of the medication.
Forteo acts by intermittently stimulating bone formation, unlike antiresorptive therapies that slow bone loss. By mimicking the natural action of parathyroid hormone, it increases calcium absorption and promotes new bone growth. Clinical trials have demonstrated significant improvements in bone mineral density and fracture reduction in patients treated with teriparatide.
