Description

Escitalopram Oxalate 5 mg tablets are a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used for the treatment of major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. The medication increases serotonin levels in the central nervous system by inhibiting its reuptake at presynaptic neurons, enhancing neurotransmission and improving mood stability. It is commonly prescribed for patients experiencing persistent depressive symptoms, excessive worry, and anxiety-related disorders.

Each tablet contains 5 mg of escitalopram oxalate and is administered orally, typically once daily, with or without food. The drug is well absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and reaches peak plasma concentration within 4 to 5 hours. It undergoes hepatic metabolism primarily via the CYP2C19, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4 enzyme pathways.

Common side effects include nausea, headache, drowsiness, dry mouth, and insomnia. More serious adverse reactions, such as serotonin syndrome, QT prolongation, and increased risk of suicidal thoughts in young adults, require close monitoring. Caution is advised in patients with a history of seizures, bipolar disorder, or bleeding disorders due to potential exacerbation of symptoms.
