Description
Aranesp (darbepoetin alfa) 60 mcg/mL is a recombinant human erythropoietin analog formulated as a polysorbate-containing solution for subcutaneous or intravenous administration. It is used to stimulate erythropoiesis in patients with anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and chemotherapy-induced anemia in non-myeloid malignancies. The active ingredient, darbepoetin alfa, has a longer half-life compared to epoetin alfa, allowing for less frequent dosing while maintaining effective red blood cell production.
Aranesp is supplied in single-dose vials containing a clear, colorless solution. It should be stored at refrigerated temperatures between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) and protected from light. The formulation does not contain preservatives; therefore, unused portions should be discarded. The vial should not be shaken to prevent denaturation of the protein, and administration should occur promptly after withdrawal into a syringe.
Darbepoetin alfa functions as an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) by binding to the erythropoietin receptor on progenitor cells in the bone marrow, promoting differentiation and proliferation of red blood cells. It is indicated for anemia management in patients with CKD requiring dialysis and those not on dialysis.
