Description

Suprane (desflurane) liquid inhalant is a volatile anesthetic agent used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in surgical procedures. It is administered via a specialized vaporizer designed to deliver controlled concentrations. Desflurane provides rapid onset and recovery due to its low blood-gas partition coefficient, making it particularly useful for outpatient surgeries where quick emergence from anesthesia is desired.

The agent is minimally metabolized by the liver, with the majority exhaled unchanged through the lungs. This property reduces the risk of hepatotoxicity compared to other inhaled anesthetics. Desflurane depresses respiratory drive and reduces tidal volume, necessitating close monitoring of ventilation.

Adverse effects include coughing, breath-holding, laryngospasm, and increased airway resistance, particularly in patients with reactive airway diseases. It can trigger malignant hyperthermia in susceptible individuals, necessitating avoidance in patients with a known genetic predisposition.
