Description
Zoledronic Acid 4 mg/5 mL Concentrate Injection is a sterile, preservative-free solution formulated for intravenous administration. It contains zoledronic acid, a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate, known for its high potency in inhibiting osteoclastic bone resorption. This injection is presented as a single-dose vial containing 4 mg of active drug in 5 mL of solution, intended for dilution prior to infusion.
The pharmacological action of zoledronic acid involves the inhibition of farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase in the mevalonate pathway. This mechanism disrupts osteoclast function, reducing bone resorption and turnover. The agent demonstrates selective action on bone tissue, particularly areas undergoing active remodeling, making it effective in reducing skeletal-related events associated with various malignancies.
Clinically, this formulation is indicated for the treatment of hypercalcemia of malignancy, multiple myeloma, and bone metastases from solid tumors. It is also used in the management of Paget’s disease of bone. The solution must be administered as a slow intravenous infusion, over a minimum of 15 minutes, and diluted with 100 mL of sterile 0.9% sodium chloride or 5% dextrose prior to administration.
