Valacyclovir HCl 500 mg tablets are an antiviral medication used primarily for the treatment of infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It is indicated for the management of conditions such as genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chickenpox. Each tablet contains 500 mg of valacyclovir hydrochloride, a prodrug that is rapidly converted into acyclovir in the body, where it exerts its therapeutic effects.

Valacyclovir works by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis. Once converted into acyclovir, it interferes with the viral enzyme DNA polymerase, preventing the replication of viral DNA. This action reduces the severity and duration of the infection, as well as the risk of viral transmission. Valacyclovir is most effective when initiated early in the course of infection.

Common side effects of valacyclovir include headache, nausea, and abdominal pain. Serious side effects, though rare, may include renal impairment, especially in patients with pre-existing kidney conditions. Regular monitoring is advised for those receiving prolonged therapy. The medication should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture.
