Description

Ibandronate Sodium Injection 3 mg PFS 3 mL is a bisphosphonate medication used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It works by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, thereby increasing bone mineral density and reducing the risk of fractures. The injection contains 3 mg of ibandronate sodium in a 3 mL prefilled syringe for intravenous administration. It is typically administered once every three months under medical supervision.

The mechanism of action involves the binding of ibandronate to hydroxyapatite in bone, where it suppresses osteoclast activity, slowing bone loss and enhancing bone strength. This results in a decreased rate of bone turnover and an improvement in bone architecture. The drug is rapidly absorbed into bone tissue following intravenous administration, with a prolonged half-life that allows for infrequent dosing.

Ibandronate Sodium Injection is indicated for postmenopausal osteoporosis, particularly in patients at high risk of fractures. It is not recommended for use in patients with severe renal impairment, low blood calcium levels, or hypersensitivity to bisphosphonates. Patients should ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake during treatment to optimize bone health.
