Description
Ferrlecit (sodium ferric gluconate complex in sucrose) is an intravenous iron replacement therapy indicated for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adult and pediatric patients aged six years and older with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis. It is administered in conjunction with epoetin therapy to support erythropoiesis in patients requiring iron supplementation.
Ferrlecit is supplied as a sterile, preservative-free solution in single-dose vials, with each 5 mL vial containing 62.5 mg of elemental iron. The solution is clear, light yellow to brown, and intended for intravenous administration only. It may be given as a slow IV injection over at least one minute or diluted in isotonic saline for infusion over one hour.
Common adverse effects include hypotension, nausea, dizziness, headache, vomiting, and injection site reactions. Serious hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, may occur, requiring careful patient monitoring during and after administration. Caution is advised in patients with a history of iron overload disorders or hypersensitivity to iron-containing products.
