Description

Sodium Chloride 0.9% is a sterile non-pyrogenic isotonic solution of normal saline in water. Each ml contains 9 mg of sodium chloride and 9 mg of benzyl alcohol as a preservative to cease bacterial growth. The constituents also include hydrochloric acid to adjust the pH.

The multiple-dose flip-top vial is for multiple withdrawals for the dilution of medications. It is a parenteral preparation used for the purpose of dilution or dissolution of drugs for IV, IM, or Subcutaneous injection. The volume of dissolution depends on the concentration of a vehicle, dose, and route of administration, as suggested by the physician.

As it contains benzyl alcohol as a preservative, it must not be given to the neonatal population due to the potential of this component toxicity in neonates. Febrile response, Tissue necrosis, infection at the injection site, and local tenderness are the possible adverse effects. Bacteriostatic sodium chloride 0.9% is a parenteral preparation that doesn’t cause a threat of fluid overload except in infants.
