Description

ZOSTAVAX is a live attenuated vaccine that comes as a single dose lyophilized suspension for subcutaneous injection. It is a 0.65 ml vial supplied with a diluent. The vaccine is stored frozen. Upon removal from the freezer, the vaccine should be immediately reconstituted. ZOSTAVAX upon reconstitution is translucent to hazy, pale yellow to off-white suspension. ZOSTAVAX vaccine must not be used after 30 minutes of reconstitution to minimize loss of potency. Also, once reconstituted, the vaccine must not be freezed. It is indicated for the prevention of herpes zoster (Shingles) in individuals 50 years or older. The vaccine should not be used in adolescents and children.

Note that ZOSTAVAX is NOT indicated for the treatment of zoster or postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and primary varicella infection (Chickenpox). ZOSTAVAX should be administered using a sterile syringe free of preservatives. The recommended site for subcutaneous injection is the deltoid region of the upper arm. Do not administer ZOSTAVAX to a pregnant woman.
