Description
Varivax vaccine is 0.5 ml single-dose vial containing lyophilized suspension for injection. The vaccine is reconstituted using the supplied sterile diluent. The vaccine is made up of live attenuated strains of the varicella virus. Varivax vaccine is indicated for active immunization and prevention of varicella in individuals of age 12 months or older. The second dose is then administered at the age of 4 to 6 years. For administration, the vaccine must be reconstituted using the entire volume of diluent supplied.
After reconstitution, the lyophilized vaccine will change from a white crystalline lump to a clear colorless or pale yellow liquid. The reconstituted vaccine must be administered as soon as possible to minimize the chances of loss of potency. Also, discard the reconstituted vaccine if not used within 8 hours. It is recommended to administer the vaccine either on the deltoid region of the upper arm or the higher anterolateral part of the thigh. Do not administer a varivax vaccine to a pregnant woman.
