The ETHILON™ Monofilament Suture, Black, Size 5-0, 18", S-14 Needle is a sterile, synthetic, nonabsorbable surgical suture composed of long-chain aliphatic polymers, specifically nylon (polyamide). Its monofilament construction minimizes tissue drag and facilitates smooth passage through tissue. The black coloration enhances intraoperative visibility and supports accurate placement in low-contrast anatomical environments.

This suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and ligation, including ophthalmic procedures. It is not absorbed by the body but undergoes extremely slow hydrolytic degradation and encapsulation, generally over a period of one to two years. The low tissue reactivity profile ensures minimal acute inflammatory response and promotes clean healing with reduced fibrotic reaction.

The S-14 spatula needle is designed for microsurgical and ophthalmic use, allowing controlled, planar penetration through delicate tissues such as the sclera or cornea. The needle’s flat profile and cutting edges provide precise handling and minimal trauma to adjacent anatomical structures during suturing.
