Description
Fulvestrant 50 mg/mL is a selective estrogen receptor degrader (SERD) used in the treatment of hormone receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer. It functions as an estrogen receptor antagonist by binding to estrogen receptors and promoting their degradation, thereby inhibiting estrogen-dependent tumor growth. This mechanism makes it effective in postmenopausal women with advanced breast cancer.
The formulation is supplied as a 5 mL solution in prefilled syringes, with each package containing two syringes. It is administered as an intramuscular injection, typically given once per month, with an initial loading dose regimen in certain cases. The drug is absorbed slowly from the injection site, ensuring sustained receptor blockade and prolonged therapeutic activity.
Common adverse effects include injection site pain, nausea, fatigue, and musculoskeletal discomfort. Serious reactions such as elevated liver enzymes, hypersensitivity reactions, and thromboembolic events may occur. Patients with hepatic impairment require dose adjustments due to the drug’s metabolism in the liver.
